For three years in a row they have unwaveringly ruled the Superliga of small football, but the reign of the Brno team ended on Saturday in Boskovice. Staropramen Praha dominated the superfinal of the elite men’s category, winning 3:2 after penalty kicks.
In normal time the match ended 2:2, Staropramen won the penalty shootout. “It’s great, it was finally time to topple them. The boys from Brno played well, I was glad to see them, but I’d rather see them in second place than first,” smiled Prague defender František Hakl.
The Brno players found their conqueror after three years of celebrating the title. “It bites bitterly because the playoffs are exciting, you look forward and prepare all the time for the final, you want to make it. We know we had a streak that’s hard to beat, three titles in a row, unfortunately we didn’t make it this time.
Twice we were ahead, twice we got stupid goals and penalties are a lottery. TheBrno players are not good at it lately,” Brno defender Patrik Levcik sighed, referring to the Czech national team’s penalty shootout loss to Romania in the European Championship quarterfinals.
The defending champions started well when Tomáš Pospiš sent them into the lead in the 13th minute. But David Poznicek equalised a minute later. In the eighteenth minute, Brno’s David Presl fired and the ball deflected off the crossbar into Prague’s David Baran and into his own net.
“After our first goal, we got a useless goal right from a set piece, that shouldn’t happen to such an experienced team. The second thing is that at 2:1 we were maybe running out of batteries a little bit, we retreated a little bit and hid behind the players. We didn’t want the ball, we played simple football up top and the opponent got breaks out of it. We weren’t on the ball much,” Levcik admitted.
In the 49th minute came the equaliser from the Super Final’s best player Daniel Zížala. “At the beginning it was more the Brno team pressing, then we found out that they were running out of possession and when we put a quicker pass from behind they didn’t catch when we ran out. I think the game was more even after that and towards the end we were pulling the shortest string. It was a bare-knuckle game and I think the crowd liked it,” said Hakl.
No goal was scored in the overtime, although Staropramen players hoped to score. “Weknew we still had the strength to break it and maybe not only equalise but score the winning goal. It came down to penalties, which we were lucky to win,” Hakl sighed.
The first penalty kick was missed by Brno’s Jakub Dobšíček. “Of course, we wanted to start first so that we would have an advantage and put the opponent under pressure that they had to score. I know what it’s like not to give a penalty at this level, it just happens, there’s nothing we can do. The player has to erase it from his mind and focus on the next game,” Levcik said.
For Staropramen, all three penalty shootout officials Daniel Žížala, Stanislav Mařík and Tomáš Jelínek managed the penalty shootout. “I was the joker in the four, if the fourth attempt comes, I will be the joker in the five,” smiled Hakl. ” So I was waiting to see if by chance the guys would go, they wanted to, so I didn’t get stuck,” Hakl smiled.
