Saturday night’s German Bundesliga match was overshadowed by two tragic events. The result of the match between Leipzig and Mönchengladbach was therefore secondary. A fan died at the stadium and another died on the way to the match.
The match between Leipzig and Mönchengladbach kicked off at 18:30 on Saturday amidst grave silence. One of the Borussia fans died in a car accident on the way to Leipzig. Moreover, right after kick-off, the announcer announced that the Leipzig fan had collapsed and was fighting for his life.
Despite Leipzig taking the lead on the pitch, the fans of both camps remained silent. At half-time it was announced that a Leipzig fan had also died. The half-time programme was immediately cancelled.
The spectators did not even start cheering in the second half, but instead switched on their mobile phone torches to honour the two victims. Leipzig coach Marco Rose described it as a great reaction from the whole stadium.
Bundesliga saddened
” You feel a strange atmosphere right from the start. We heard about the accident of the Gladbach fan before the game and it affected us deeply. It was clear that there would be no chanting from the away end.
Then we realised relatively quickly that even in our cauldron there was silence. We were informed that something had happened there. It was immediately clear that this was what we feared,” he said, as quoted by Kicker magazine.
” I have to be honest and say that I noticed in the first half that there was no cheering from the Gladbach side or from our side. I found out at half-time. The substitutes informed us about it.”
After the match, which Leipzig won 2:0 after goals by Simons and Openda, silence continued, and finally not even the obligatory post-match music was heard.
“Despite all this, it’s all about points, but you quickly realise that there is something else important in life. Health. It was one Gladbach fan and one Leipzig fan. My condolences to the families,” added Marco Rose.
Leipzig moved closer to fourth-placed Dortmund in the table, while Mönchengladbach is languishing in the second half of the table.
