On March 2, Piotr Wawrzyniak can become the second Polish champion in the history of the Oktagon. but he’s going to have a tough time. His opponent will be Patrik Kincl, the organization’s number one according to the P4P rankings. What does the conqueror of Wlad Czep have to say about the battle in an interview with Ruik?
He currently holds the title in two organizations. Oktagon signed him as a replacement for the injured Patrik Kincl, who was supposed to defend his belt with Vlast Čep. He was already the king of Polish Babylon at the time. He later defeated the Slovakian brawler and became the interim champion of the Czechoslovak number one brand as well.
“Life is still the same. But the surroundings perceive it. It is beautiful that I became a champion. A lot of people congratulated me, it was nice,” Piotr Wawrzyniak answered in an interview with Ruik when asked if the Octagon title has made any fundamental changes in his life.
He faced Chep at the end of December. Although he won, he took a lot of cashes himself in the fight. And going into action two months after a tough fight, against the toughest opponent of his career so far? “I only had bruises on my face and a laceration on my forehead. I took a two-week break. Once they pulled the stitches out, I went back to training,” he dismisses any complaining.
It is worth mentioning, however, that the duel with Patrik Kinclo was not expected to take place so soon. The Czech champion had a broken orbital bone, such an injury usually requires a slightly longer break. He admits that he is taking a bit of a risk with the March date.
“I am surprised that he recovered so quickly. He had a serious injury. But if he wants to fight, I assume he’s ready. I counted on the fight sooner or later, I just didn’t expect it this fast,” admits Piotr Wawrzyniak.
Kincl is a huge challenge, says Piotr Wawrzyniak
When he came for the title in the Octagon, there were no big celebrations. “They took place right at the hotel after the tournament. Then we went to a party in the city,” says Piotr Wawrzyniak, who then talked about his upcoming opponent.
“I know that Patrik is a huge challenge for me. He is the number one in the Czech Republic and he is an excellent all-round athlete. He knows very well what he is talking about. In all aspects of the fight. I’m happy to be able to measure my strength with him,” he said.
When he had to talk about Patrik Kinzl’s strongest points, he didn’t have to think long. “Definitely experience and the fact that he has had so many fights in which he has defended his title,” referring, among other things, to the fact that the Inspector has exactly 20 more fights under his belt.
And the fact that Kincl himself revealed that the March date was a bit of a gamble for him? “If he accepted the fight, I take it he’s 100 percent healthy. If he has any problems, he probably shouldn’t take that much risk.”
Piotr Wawrzyniak himself is in fact 100 percent. Moreover, he is confident, which is what his preparation looks like. He hasn’t adapted it to the fact that his opponent is Kincl. “I prepare the same way I prepare for every opponent. The most important thing is that I am mentally and physically fit. I will react to what happens during the match,” he says.
Of course, the Pole did not want to reveal his tactics, but he is counting on one thing. On Ostrava: ” It’s close to the Polish border. I’m sure a lot of Polish fans will come.”
His prediction at the end was quite clear. “I will become the rightful champion of the Octagon!” he said at the end of the interview.
