Matěj Peňáz showed another great performance in Ostrava. Although he had to rely on the scoring judges for the first time, his dominance and activity was clear in the duel with Giovanni Melillo. How does he see his future?
The Brno native has only been involved in MMA for a short time, yet he has already established himself as one of the biggest stars in the Octagon. Many already see him in the UFC, or at least as a possible title holder in the Octagon.
Matej Peñáz owes his current reputation to the coronavirus. “He was Underground and I finally started to pursue MMA full time. I’ve managed six wins since then and I’m happy with my current development,” he expressed in an Instagram live stream.
He currently trains in Sweden, specifically at Stockholm’s Allstars Gym, where UFC stars like Khamzat Chimaev, Alexander Gustafsson and Ilir Latifi train. However, Darren Till also recently visited the gym and even fought for the title.
According to him, he is definitely not getting the misery, on the contrary, he says it is great to be able to compare himself with fighters who belong to the world’s best organization.
Peñaz also appreciates the fact that he can make a living as a professional athlete: “I can afford it because of sponsors, not fights. I didn’t have that before. Of course, it’s not a hit parade that I’m swimming in money, but I’m glad that it works out that way now.”
Meanwhile, up until six months ago, he was a trainer in addition to wrestling himself. Now he has more time to recover and to devote to himself.
Peñaz is in no hurry to win the Octagon title. What about the UFC?
Matej Peňáz is more and more often mentioned among fans as a potential title challenger. However, as he himself admitted, it’s not his priority at the moment. He says it would be good, but he is in no hurry.
” The Octagon is a great organization, soon to be the biggest in Europe, but I’m also attracted to the UFC. I believe I’m up for it. I’ve been in Glory, so I believe I can get into the UFC. Everything has its time, it’s about perseverance, getting better and working on yourself.”
He doesn’t know how many fights are left in his road to the UFC, but he believes we’ll all find out soon enough.
However, the new Czechoslovakian RFA organization was also interested in the Octagon star. However, he didn’t get the offer. “They just approached me to see if I had a contract with the Octagon. I had a new one at the time, so I wasn’t planning on switching. That was our whole communication,” Peňáz revealed.
He now plans to take a break from fighting, and is expected to be in the cage around September. His opponent could be Vlasto Čepo.
