Patrik Kincl reveals the difficulties of defending Wawrzyniak: underestimation, punches to the back of the head and blurred vision
A champion with everything. Patrik Kincl proved that he can win even a match in which everything does not go according to his plan. In Ostrava he finished off challenger Piotr Wawrzyniak and remains the longest reigning king of the Octagon. However, he had to deal with several problems in the duel.
A champion with everything. Patrik Kincl proved that he can win even a match in which everything does not go according to his plan. In Ostrava he finished off challenger Piotr Wawrzyniak and remains the longest reigning king of the Oktagon. However, he had to deal with several problems in the duel.
However, it cannot be said that the fight with Piotr Wawrzyniak went completely according to plan. After all, it was accompanied by several complications. For example, there was a lot of talk about whether the Inspector had taken the fight with such a tough opponent too soon after such a serious injury he had suffered.
A broken eye socket is no joke. But the champion himself was aware of that. He admitted that by accepting the fight he had taken a chance and told of potential trouble. But he trusted himself enough to take it anyway. And he didn’t have it easy.
The Pole was strong, well prepared tactically, constantly applying pressure. He was trying to attack the place that the champion had hurt. The first round was won by Patrik Kincl, but the second round was dominated by Piotr Wawrzyniak, who also entered the third round well.
However, the King of the Oktagon showed his qualities, he got out of a difficult situation by attempting a kimura, thanks to which he got into a great position and was able to finish his opponent on the arm-triangle.
Patrik Kincl talked about the difficulties in the match
The champion broke down the fight with Piotr Wawrzyniak on his YouTube channel. In the video, he referred to the tactics for the match as fisherman tactics, i.e. loosen up, tighten up and over and over again.
“The gameplan was to not let him get close. Keep him moving, let him get wrung out and drained. Every empty punch eats up a lot of power, especially the powerful grenades he went into with his whole body. That’s what the first round was about. But it was pretty much thrown off by the punches to the suspensor,” says Patrik Kincl.
He landed two punches to the groin. So he had to balance the line between being ready to continue fighting and not letting the challenger regain his strength and conditioning twice.
“After the first round I thought the tactics were working and that I was fine, but in the second round Piotr surprised me a lot. He worked a lot and I stayed in the mode of dodging him, slowly melting him down and looking to score in the third, fourth and fifth rounds. Anyway, he was moving interestingly, it was hard for me to hit him,” admitted the champion.
“Two falls in the match cost me a lot of punches to the back of the head. But it was within the rules, everything in motion. He has a great killer instinct. I can still feel the back of my head banging. It also blurred my vision a bit, making it a little harder to see. It was uncomfortable. After the second round I thought I underestimated it,” he added.
But Wawrzyniak was eventually pulled down by Patrik Kincl in the third round. However, he has words of praise for his opponent. The Pole said he fought smart and had great technical skills, but it wasn’t enough to win the rightful title.
