When we talk about who deserves the award for Fighter of the Year 2022, the name of Jiri Prochazka, who won the UFC title in an incredible fight with Glover Teixeira this summer, must not be missed.
Taking the purely domestic scene, and perhaps the Octagon specifically, we could also pick out some interesting names. Promoter Ondrej Novotny, however, pulled out one rather surprising, yet completely understandable one.
One of the founders of Oktagon could not fail to highlight the incredible record that Vladimir Lengal boasts over the past year. He jumped into 12 fights across MMA, boxing and K1 in 2022 and won 11 of them.
Obviously, Novotny sees Prochazka as the fighter of the year, but Lengal is the fighter of the year in his opinion, at least within the Czech Republic.
“Having 12 fights in a year, winning 11 of them, 4 in MMA, finishing all of them, two of them by elbow from a spin. To lose a single fight on a three-day short-notice to Vasek Sivak and after the fight look like the fight didn’t happen? I talked to Vlad for half an hour after that fight and he was actually unimpressed by it,” the Octagon promoter expressed on the MMA Flight Through the World podcast.
“To be a guy who can do K1, boxing and MMA at that level? I have nothing to add. Vlado Lengal is my personal hero in 2022. A fantastic KO in a boxing heavyweight fight at the end of the year… I’m glad we have a contract together and that it will be good,” Novotny added.
Lengal wants to go for a title in the Octagon
Lengál probably took care of the biggest surprise under MMA rules when he flashed a win over Karol Rysavy in the new FABRIQ organization, which has partnered with the Octagon, with the aforementioned spinning elbow that broke the Slovakian star’s jaw.
Immediately after this sensational win, the Moravian fighter declared that he would like to go for the title in the Octagon. And why not. In the past year, he has not only proven that he is great in the stand-up, but that he has also improved greatly on the ground.
He can continue his quest for a title shot as early as February 11 at the Audi Dome in Munich, where he will be challenged by the experienced Deiga Scheck. He has defeated Radek Roushal under Underground rules, for example, and last time he shone in the Octagon against Cory Tait.
Can Lengal build on his great year in 2022 and put on a similar batch of fights?
