Kaik Brito silenced Ostravar Arena. He was the first Oktagon fighter to defeat the home favourite David Kozma and ended his long-lasting dominance. Welterweight has a new king. Exclusively for Ruik, he expressed his feelings immediately after winning the title.
He promised to be champion. And he did make good on that promise. He did what no one had done before him. Kaik Brito put on a phenomenal and incredible performance on Saturday night, absolutely destroying the only Welterweight champion to date, David Kozma.
After the fight, the Brazilian fighter made no secret of the fact that it was a tougher fight than he expected. Although even before it, he said Kozma was a huge heartthrob. After the press conference, they chatted and expressed their mutual respect for each other.
“I respect him a lot. We are part of one sports family. One of us had to win,” he revealed in an interview with Ruik about what they actually discussed. It was, of course, all the more relieving when the referee finally stopped the fight in the third round.
Holy shit, I did it!
Immediate feelings? “When I knew I had done it, I was like, ‘Holy shit, I did it!’ And no wonder. Kozma took one hard hit after another, but he showed incredible heart and survived countless critical moments.
The entire sold-out Ostravar Arena drove the Pink Panther to get up. The match was extremely and dramatically experienced. It didn’t affect the new champion: “It was a feeling that when someone is cheering for you, you are happy for it, but when someone is cheering against you, you are even happier because it is a challenge, you can prove something to these people.”
Kozma, however, wasn’t the only one who didn’t come out of the game completely healthy. Brito had already arrived at the press conference with a bandaged hand, but it should only be a bump. “I think it happened in the second round. I felt it, but it wasn’t a problem. The adrenaline numbed me enough that I didn’t feel it in the fight,” revealed the new welterweight king.
Brito certainly didn’t go into the locker room with a firm and healthy stride after that. It was obvious from the look of him that it was not just his arm that was injured. “He kicked my leg, so it hurts a little bit, but I’m trying not to stress it,” he denied that it was a serious injury.
He also offered a comparison between Kozma and Peter Knight, who he officially lost to on points, partly because Monster literally trapped him on the ground in the second and third rounds: ” I was hurt then and I don’t feel like Monster was any great on that ground. I think I won that fight.”
After the tournament, however, promoter Ondřej Novotný said that by winning the title, the new champion had won a clear place in this project. However, he also pointed out that the goal was to make it primarily a European Champions League, which was to feature the only man not from Europe – Leandro Silva.
Brito, however, admitted before the fight that the UFC was watching him. So the question was what he would prefer in the event of a concrete offer. But he wasn’t too specific: “I have a team behind me and together they will decide what’s best for us .”
The Brazilian fighter takes winning a title very seriously. After all, it cost him a lot of energy and strength. That’s why he has clear plans when he returns home. “I’m going to eat a lot and rest,” he concluded the interview.
