Although Vémola and Marpo set the pace of the fight, the fans booed him
The beginning of June belonged to the biggest domestic MMA organization Oktagon tournament under the rules of boxing. The gala event at Prague’s O2 Arena was dominated by a battle between singer Marpo and Karlos Vémola, who is definitely not a fish out of water when it comes to mixed martial arts.
Although Marpo was a surprising favourite with the bookmakers when the fight was announced, the cards turned just before the fight. The fight itself then proceeded virtually according to Vemola’s notes and the bout was stopped by the referee between the ropes in the fourth round.
The Terminator left no one in doubt and won by technical knockout. However, the fans booed Vemola during the fight and especially during the announcement of the winners and after the fight they blamed him for his boxing performance.
How does Oktagon promoter Ondřej Novotný remember the fight?
Oktagon promoter Ondřej Novotný commented on the fight itself and offered his opinion on the matter. “I say to the people who booed Karlos when he beat Marpo, and who blamed him for the fight, that they are out of their minds,” he said in an interview with Progresus Invest Holding.
“Marpo didn’t do one good thing in that fight and you are blaming Karlos,” he asked in amazement. “Not once did Marpo go sideways, not once into the middle, not once did he clinch with Karlos,” he assessed the singer’s performance.
“The referee stopped the match more than 30 times before he stopped it,” he recalled. “Just a clueless performance from the first to the last minute of the match and then people boo Carlos for an ugly match,” he marveled.
And how does he explain the boos for the biggest star in the Octagon? “He’s having a hard time,” he agreed with his colleague and co-owner of Oktagon Palo Neruda. “When you win for a long time, people care and want to see you back on your knees,” he outlined his view.
