Saturday’s OKTAGON 32 tournament was again not without controversy. The result of the match between Jakub Dohnal and Iamik Furtado caused a stir, as the former admitted that he had hoped for at least a draw. What did the promoter Ondřej Novotný have to say?
It was supposed to be a great comeback. Jakub Dohnal, participant and finalist of the third series of the reality show Oktagon Challenge, presented himself at Saturday’s OKTAGON 32 tournament in Ostravar Arena in Vítkovice. His opponent was Iamik Furtado.
Although Furtado fought in Bellator, for example, bookmakers and fans had a favourite in Dohnal. He won that fight too, but the fans didn’t like the way he fought or the fact that he won. They booed during the fight and after the result was announced.
Dohnal tried to take his opponent down in the first round, but he didn’t give in to either attempt. Virtually no punches landed. In the second round, the situation was different, especially in that Dohnal jumped on Furtado’s back, but he did not allow his opponent to choke him.
In the third round Dohnal was already noticeably tired, so Furtado started to destroy him and didn’t let him do anything. The Czech fighter could be glad that he lasted until the end of the third round. After that, he was able to enjoy a very close win on points. But as already mentioned, the result earned him a whistle.
All the scoring judges agreed that Dohnal won the first two rounds 10::9, but only one judge saw Furtado win the third round 10::8, which would have meant a draw if all the judges agreed. The other two, however, only saw Dohnal lose 10::9, which was enough for the Czech fighter to win.
“It’s about feeling and the feeling is false. I’m not a points judge anymore because I haven’t trained for a while. I’m not keeping up, even though I’m still interested in it. I understand that Dohnal could have won, even though I wouldn’t have given it to him. But then again, that’s always the last impression,” Novotny expressed on his Instagram live stream.
The Octagon promoter also pointed out that the tournament featured a French referee who until recently refereed fights at UFC V London. He, too, saw Dohnal win.
