Liverpool were able to enjoy another trophy on Saturday, beating Chelsea on penalties, but the win took its toll. And not an insignificant one.
In the 33rd minute, star striker Mohamed Salah had to be taken off the pitch and replaced by Diogo Jota. Virgil Van Dijk did not come on for the extra time and was replaced by Joel Matip.
Unfortunately for Jürgen Klopp’s squad, both Reds stars were injured and understandably there was panic about what Liverpool would do without them in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. However, their participation in this duel is definitely not out of the question. On the contrary.
Klopp gave Liverpool fans a dose of hope immediately after the game. Both Salah and Van Dijk were substituted as a precaution.
“Salah told me that he felt something, but that he could continue the game. I answered him that football is not a great physiotherapy and that injuries rarely get better during a football match,” Klopp told the club’s website.
“Then Virgil came to me and, like Mohamed, said he felt something but that he thought he would be fine. I spoke to both of them after the game and they are both fine. Itshouldn’t be something serious in their case,” the Liverpool coach let slip.
Liverpool’s next game is on Tuesday. Their condition and fitness for the match will be assessed in the training sessions that await the team. If they tell him that they are completely fine, he will accommodate them and will calmly put them in the game.
