Referee Jan Frána finally broke the silence regarding Oktagon Underground, where he controversially ended the main match of the evening Karlos Vémola vs. Marpo.
The decision to end the Vémola vs. Marpo boxing match sparked a wave of discontent
The last gala of the leading domestic MMA organization Oktagon, which unusually focused on stand-up duels, brought mixed feelings. The main drawcard of the tournament was definitely the main fight, where Karlos Vémola won in a boxing contest against singer Marpo.
Not only the professional and non-professional public criticized the boxing style of the winner Vémola. At least controversial was the decision of the ring referee Jan Frána, who stopped the fight in the fourth round.
The decision sparked a wave of discontent across the media and fan community. The owner of the organization Ondrej Novotny and the fighters themselves did not like it either, especially Marpo let it be known after the fight that he did not feel threatened even once in the fight.
Referee Frana explains the reason for his decision
Everyone who has anything to do with combat sports in the Czech Republic commented on the fight. But now the author of the decision, the main referee of the match, has also commented on the termination.
“I think I would have made the same decision. I wouldn’t have changed it because I made the decision I made based on what I saw,” Frana replied to iSport’s question whether he would have decided differently in hindsight.
“The decision was a TKO, or a technical knockout, where the referee stops the fight because of the overwhelming superiority of one of the boxers, without counting,” he said of the reason for the early stoppage.
“It was very often stated that it was for inactivity, but it was for the absolute optical superiority of the opponent and to protect the health of the fighter who was turning,” he put to rest speculation about his decision, adding that he thought Marpo was in danger of his health after several punches from Vemola on the bottom.
In the interview, he denied speculation of biased match management
After the fight, of course, there was speculation that the fight was managed in a tendentious manner for whatever reasons. “I had no desire for one or the other to win, I didn’t want either one to win more,” Frana denied the speculation.
“I have been present at big international events where, for example, at the World Championships, there were deaths later, so I really tried to protect my health,” he added.
