Jonas Magard: I’m not doing trash-talk, I’m just stating the facts. Macek is dangerous, Sivak knows I would end him in MMA

Jonas Magard is the Octagon bantamweight champion, having defeated Filip Mack in a title fight a year ago. Now he will have his first title defence and his opponent will be again a very experienced Czech fighter. In an exclusive interview with Ruik, he spoke not only about the fight with Mack, he also commented on Vaclav Sivak.

Jonas Magard may not have had a large number of fights in the Octagon, but he has etched himself into the memories of fans quite easily. In fact, he absolutely revels in picking on his opponents in various ways and many would call his behavior trash-talk.

The Danish fighter last stood out in Ostrava at the OKTAGON Time press conference, where he tried to upset Filip Macek. The Czech bantamweight champion certainly didn’t feel at ease, and Magard’s behaviour was certainly not enjoyed by the highly experienced Macek.

“I didn’t try to get into his head. I was just saying what I see and feel. I think the fans need to know what’s going through my head. I want people to feel what I feel and see. A lot of people talk about trash-talk, but for me it’s not trash-talk. I don’t do any, I just tell the facts,” Magard is clear.

Originally, Magard’s rematch with Mack was supposed to be the main event, but due to injuries to both Karlos Vemola and Patrik Kinclo, it will end up being the main event of OKTAGON 38.

“Having the main event at the O2 Arena in Prague will be incredible. It’s like a dream come true. I can’t say that you can expect any surprises, because what you will see will be no surprise. I never plan what I’m going to do or say. I go by the present moment and that’s why it’s so real,” says the bantamweight champion.

Mack, however, is certainly not underestimating:: “I expect a tough fight. We know each other a little better now, which is good on one hand and bad on the other. It’s MMA, anything can happen, but I’ve improved 10 times since my last fight. All I have to do is step up and prove it.”

“It’s all going to be about me. Filip is unpredictable and dangerous, so I’m not underestimating him by any means. I’ll give 100% in the fight, I’m ready for anything,” added Magard.

Everything happens for a reason

As mentioned before, the bantamweight champion hasn’t shown his stuff in the Octagon that many times again. He’s only facing his third fight in MMA with the organization, and his second time facing Filip Mack.

This year it will be his first ever MMA fight, which of course does not please the Danish fighter. Jonas Magard, however, claims that several fights have fallen through, albeit not of his own volition.

“I’ve been prepared all year, but unfortunately I didn’t fight much, even if not by my will. Everything happens for a reason. I plan to be much more active next year. This year there was no one I could wrestle, but 2023 will be more challenging. I want to do 3-4 fights,” he says.

The bantamweight division isn’t that loaded, so a move up in weight where the competition is much more intense would be in order. However, Magard isn’t planning anything like that. And what does he have planned for next year? “I have some names in my head, but right now I’m just focusing on Philip. I’m going to be active in bantamweight.”

Sivak knows I would have finished him in MMA

In addition to his two MMA fights, Jonas Magard also had a boxing match in the Octagon. In May, he took on arguably the biggest domestic stand-up star already, who is none other than the talented Vaclav Sivak.

Just as the Danish fighter made Filip Macek’s pre-fight days miserable with his words, he tried to do the same in Sivak’s case, but with a completely different result. While he was able to cope with Mack, he was no match for Sivak in Prague’s O2 Arena.

“In some ways that fight will help me in my MMA career. I went into it with the intention to prove myself. At least mentally, the fight pushed me further,” Magard said.

There was a lot of talk about a possible rematch under MMA rules, but according to the Dane, it will never happen. “Sivak will never step into the world of MMA, certainly not with me. He felt my power in the fight and knows I would have finished him if I used all my skills,” he concluded the interview.
