Star striker Christopher Nkunku is leaving RB Leipzig for good and moving to Chelsea. The London outfit made the official announcement on their club website on Tuesday morning.
Nkunku joined Leipzig in July 2019 from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of just €13 million. Now his market value is several times that, according to the Transfermarkt website, it is specifically 80 million euros.
In any case, in that time he has played 172 competitive matches for the Bundesliga club, scoring 70 goals and assisting 56 more.
The transfer of the PSG graduate has therefore been expected for some time, and according to the well-known and trusted journalist Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have been in contact for a long time.
“I am incredibly happy to join Chelsea. A lot of effort has been made for me to come to the club. I am very much looking forward to the challenge and I will be proud to wear the Chelsea jersey,” Nkunku said in an interview with the club website.
Will he make it in the Premier League?
Nkunku has signed a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea set to send 60 million euros to Leipzig. Another 10 million could go to Germany as part of the bonus component.
“Christopher has proved himself to be one of the most outstanding attacking players in European football over the past two seasons and will add quality, creativity and versatility to our squad,” said the club’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.
Nkunku, it must be added, has also already made ten starts for the French national team. The new contract will start on July 1, when the summer transfer window opens.
Whether he will be able to make it in the Premier League as well after his time in Ligue 1 and especially the Bundesliga is questionable. We can still remember Tim Werner’s recent engagement at Chelsea.
The transition to a different style of football is particularly difficult for a player from Germany, but Nkunku can do much better thanks to his speed and huge potential.
