Would you expect Al Matavao to go to bed early the night before a tough fight in the Octagon against the favored Czech warrior Karlos “Terminator” Vemola? Well, you’re wrong. The Samoan fighter spent the night before the fight visiting bars in Liberec, where 41. Octagon was taking place.

Al Matavao arrived in the Czech Republic in poor form, so it’s no wonder Vémola was considered the clear favorite for the clash.

Bookmakers wrote odds of up to 11 on Matavao’s victory, while the “Terminator” was so confident that his odds were somewhere as high as 1.02.

Friday’s weigh-in revealed that Matavao, at 173 centimetres, certainly doesn’t weigh enough to fit the 89 kilograms limit. When he was weighed in, he did not even fit into the inflated 92 kilograms, with the scale showing 95 kilograms.

I arrived on Wednesday afternoon after a twenty-four hour flight from America and my body just stopped working. Thewater stayed in the muscles, so I couldn’t lose any more weight,” the American Samoan shrugged in an interview with iDnes.

He headed to the bars in Liberec to drink his failure, and several fans met him sitting with a beer in the middle of the night on the day of the match. “I slept for maybe four hours, I couldn’t sleep, so I went to occupy my mind. Take a walk, sit around a bit,” Matavao said.

I honestly don’t know if he’ll get another chance with us. I don’t want to say anything bad about him because he’s a nice guy and also considering what happened to him a few weeks ago (his mother died – ed.).

Heis always dangerous in the cage, but he will never make weight,” said Oktagon promoter Ondrej Novotny.
