Gustavo Lopez: Magard the Shark? I’ll drown him, he’s not that good. He has to drop people to make himself feel better

Liberec will see a very attractive bantamweight title fight on Saturday, April 15. Interim champion Gustavo Lopez and the current king of the division Jonas Magard will face each other.
Both fighters got their belts by defeating Filip Mack. While Magard beat him clearly on points in a five-round battle, Lopez didn’t linger too long with the Czech veteran in the cage and sovereignly finished him in the first round.
“For Mack, I definitely wasn’t a good replacement for Magard. He has the best grappling in Europe, but I’m one of the best in the world at it. When I took him down, I felt like I was fighting someone who was a blue belt,” Lopez reports in the documentary Journey to the Octagon.
Lopez is a UFC veteran, having fought some truly great fighters. Mention can be made of the stellar Merab Dvalishvili, who defeated the interim Octagon champion. But he has a great mind set, he wants to fight, he’ll take any fight.
That’s how he got into the UFC, he found out about joining the best organization on the planet the day before. He lost ten kilos overnight. He found out about the fight with Mack only ten days beforehand.
The sold-out O2 Arena was thrilled. He was in awe of the atmosphere in the arena. He certainly wants to experience the same in Liberec, where the arena is smaller, but the hunger for MMA can mix with the atmosphere.
Magard is just another opponent, says Lopez
And what does he actually say about the brash Magard, who keeps trying to get into his head with various remarks, insinuations and put-downs? “He has some problems, he has to put people down to make himself feel better. He’s not that good,” Lopez is clear.
“He envies me for living the life he dreams of. He doesn’t realize I do MMA full time. I have an extra business. I’ve fought all kinds of people, crazy people, world champions, the best. Magard is just another opponent. Baby Shark. He says he’s a shark, but I’ll drown him,” promises the UFC veteran.
He’ll be able to make good on his promise on Saturday, April 15.
