As expected, Rafael Benítez has become Everton’s head coach, signing a three-year contract with the club. The 61-year-old manager is returning to the city where he once spent six years.

For the Toffees, it will be another vastly experienced coach after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure to Real Madrid. After all, Benítez has led Real Madrid, Chelsea and Inter Milan, among others, during his long coaching career.

What Everton fans might not like too much – he has sovereignly coached his new employer’s arch rival, Liverpool, for the longest time (6 years, 350 games).

In addition to experience, the Madrid native can boast a number of achievements. He came to prominence at the start of the millennium during his time at Valencia, with whom he twice dominated the top Spanish league and won the UEFA Cup, even earning him the award for the best coach in the world.

He also enjoyed a successful career with Liverpool, who won the Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup under his guidance.

In three quarters of a year in charge of Chelsea, he again reached the Europa League winners’ trophy. However, although he has coached England for 10 years in total, he has yet to win a Premier League title.

Now comes another chance to change that, although the ambition of last season’s 10th-placed team is primarily to stay as high up the table as possible and to fight for at least a place in the European Cups.

“Rafa has impressed us with his knowledge and experience, but most of all with his desire and hunger to join our club,” Everton’s website quoted Farhad Moshiri, the team’s majority owner, as saying.

“We believe he will bring success. We want to move to the top of the league table and win trophies. For that, we think Rafa is the best man to do it,” he added.

Along with Benítez, the Toffees will be led by current assistant Duncan Ferguson and goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly. Other members of the implementation team will be announced in the coming days.
