After the Terminator left for the rival Octagon, the sparks of hope for the coveted Kincl vs. Vémola rematch were extinguished. But three years later, their paths crossed again in the same organization, and while one lost the title due to a rematch, the other took it. So the talk of the biggest rematch on the Czech MMA scene began anew.
Vémola dominated the domestic MMA scene after the Fight of the Century, Kincl tried to do it abroad
In the last episode we recalled the biggest transfer in the history of the Czechoslovak MMA scene. After Karlos Vémola defeated Patrik Kincl on points, it was quiet for a while. But it could be called the calm before the storm, because the storm did come and the rivalry gained momentum again.
When Vémola left for the rival Octagon and XFN had to shut down due to financial problems, a possible rematch with Patrik Kinclo was the kicker. Ondrej Novotny as co-owner of Oktagon still tried to lure Patrik to his organization, but for now their paths diverged.
While Vémola went on to the coveted Match of the Century with Attila Vegh under the Oktagon banner, Patrik Kincl signed with Polish number one KSW after XFN disbanded at the end of 2020. There, after two fights, he earned such respect that he was given a title opportunity. However, he lost that one to Robert Soldic, with whom, by the way, Vémola recently trained in Germany, by technical knockout.
After losing to Attila, Karlos mowed down one opponent after another to win the Octagon middleweight title against Alex Lohore. However, he lost that title in his first defense when he went over the set limit of 84 kg, despite finishing Milan Datelinka after two minutes. In addition, Vémola suffered an injury that sidelined him from fighting in the cage for over a year.
A year ago, Patrik took advantage of Carlos’ unweighting to take the Octagon middleweight title
The situation in the division was then taken advantage of by Patrik Kincl, who had just entered the organization with a title fight for the Oktagon middleweight championship belt. His opponent at the end of February last year was Samuel “The Pirate” Kristofich and both of them showed a five-round war, at the end of which it was Kincl who celebrated success.
Meanwhile, Vémola returned to the cage at a breakneck pace, appearing in three matches in two months. First, he managed a boxing duel with Marpo, and then he won the welterweight championship in a memorable fight with Ilic at Prague’s Štvanice. The next Oktagon tournament brought the first title defense of Patrik Kinclo, who knocked down Lohoré in the first round.
And it was the tournament in Brno where another war between two irreconcilable rivals began. Already there was a sense of rematch in the air with Vemola, who was in the hall allegedly at the promoters’ request. Champion Kincl expressed his desire not to spoil his evening with a potential rematch.
At the tournament in Brno, where Kincl was defending his title, the longed-for rematch began to take place
“Let’s sit down after this event and after the press conference,” Kinclsaid immediately after the champion was crowned. “I had some health problems in the preparation. I don’t want to spoil this night and this win I’ve been working for, finally selling the guns, with this person.”
However, Vemola jumped into the cage and everything started all over again. “Let’s go to Patrik Kinc,” he took the microphone from a surprised Ondra Novotny. “This is what he didn’t want. I congratulate him on his victory today. It was an unbelievable performance, but he should enjoy the belt until the end of the year, because at the end of the year I’ll have it back. Like my name is Terminator.”
The Winning Group Arena in Brno reacted with thunderous booing and the champion Kincl supported everything. “He only embarrassed himself,” Patrik commented briefly. Criticism and hatred of Karlos Vemola grew stronger in the following months and everything culminated in the failed rematch in December. But more about that and the next face-to-face meeting in the next episode.
