Crystal Palace are struggling at home! At Selhurst Park, they couldn’t win for the seventh time in a row
Good-looking and offensive football, but it doesn’t lead to the much-needed three points. These are Crystal Palace’s home games. The Eagles have been waiting for a win at this beautiful family stadium since September 3, 2023, when they managed to beat Wolves 3-2. In Thursday’s game, they were again not far from winning. They welcomed Brighton & Hove Albion to their stadium.
Good-looking and offensive football, but it doesn’t lead to the much-needed three points. These are Crystal Palace home games. The Eagles have been waiting for a win at this beautiful family stadium since 3 September 2023, when they managed to beat Wolves 3-2. In Thursday’s game, they were again not far from winning. They welcomed Brighton & Hove Albion to their stadium.
The match started with the visitors from Brighton. In the 19th minute, the visiting Adingra had a good opportunity to score, but his shot at the back post was well defused by the home goalkeeper Henderson.
After that the home side started to get into the game. However, a big scramble in front of goal was turned away by a trio of blocks by the well defending Brighton players.
In the first half, the home side got their chance when a misplaced cross from visiting goalkeeper Verbruggen was well caught by the talented Olise. He exchanged the ball with Hughes and then with a beautiful and accurate centre found a completely free Ayew, who managed to fish the ball into the net (1: 0).
In the second half, the home team tried to focus mainly on defensive and quick counter attacks. Brighton were able to press their opponents and this resulted in several goal scoring situations where the home goalkeeper Henderson had to intervene.
On the other hand, the home side could have decided from breakaways, but a shot by home gem Eze, who was returning to the game after injury, was blocked by a good defensive slide by stopper Hecke.
Just when it seemed that the home side would be able to defend their one-goal lead, the 82nd minute arrived. After a millimetre-accurate centre by Gross, substitute Welbeck managed to equalise with a beautiful header into the net.
The English striker could have been the hero of the match when, after a centre behind the defence, the home goalkeeper cleared the ball to Welbeck’s head. However, the ball ended up just wide of the home goal.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Interestingly, the last 5 matches between the two teams at Selhurst Park have ended with the same result.
So Crystal Palace are not ending the calendar year in a good mood. In total, the Eagles failed to win their 11th game in a row in the Premier League and will have to work hard after the New Year if they want to think about staying in the top English competition.
