In the fifth minute, Joachim Andersen had the home team’s first big chance, but one of the defending players made a successful block. Seven minutes later, Eberechi Eze shot from the edge of the box, but his effort missed the right post.
The Eagles’ good run continued, then Philippe Mateta headed over Jean and Jordan Ayew missed the target. On the other hand, Martin Dúbravka had to intervene against young Adam Wharton’s attempt from outside the box.
In the 29th minute, the visitors made the first move, but Alexander Isak’s cross was saved by goalkeeper Dean Henderson. The final quarter of an hour saw more caution from both sides, but Newcastle at least matched the number of chances.

Eze and Mateta could have added the insurance, but the former failed from a direct kick and the latter missed with a header. In the 66th minute, Will Hughes came close to scoring from the edge of the box, but only hit the top of Dúbravka’s net.
Although Newcastle played better, they had virtually no chances, the home side controlled the game and added an insurance goal in the 88th minute. After a mistake in the midfield, Mateta finished a quick action with a shot between the legs of Slovak Dúbravka.
The Eagles were able to hold on to their lead and remain in 14th place after a 2:0 win. Newcastle are two points clear of Chelsea in sixth place.
