Azpilicueta, Rüdiger, Christensen and Silva. A foursome of these players would form a defensive formation that would be hard to beat at any top club. It’s no wonder, therefore, that the Chelsea defenders are in high demand in the transfer market.
Antonio Rüdiger is reportedly headed to Real Madrid, while current captain Azpilicueta is in talks with Catalan side Barcelona. It is in Chelsea’s power to keep any of the above mentioned players, but the question remains whether Thomas Tuchel wants to keep all the players.
In the upcoming season, the German coach will be able to use the services of Thiago Silva, who has extended his contract at Stamford Bridge. “Silva’s experience, leadership and performance are very important for our team, so we are delighted to have extended his contract for another year,” said club director Marina Granovskaia.
“It is an honour to play for Chelsea. I didn’t think I would be playing at this club for three years, so I’m happy to stay here for another season,” the 37-year-old Brazilian commented on the contract extension.
Granovskaia and co. have completed their first task, will other defensive footballers follow the contract extension?
