Buchinger: I was worried about Kozma’s health. If I was in the cage, the towel would fly into the ring five times

A new era awaits the Octagon. David Kozma is no longer welterweight champion and Kaik Brito is the new Welterweight champion. There was a lot of talk about the fight, even the legendary fighter Ivan Buchinger, who watched it live in Ostrava, commented on it.

Saturday night was probably one of the best in the history of Oktagon. The tournament with number 37 offered an incredible spectacle. The sold-out Ostravar Arena created a great atmosphere and the gala evening saw one knockout after another.

But if there was one moment that didn’t excite the fans, it was David Kozma’s loss. The darling of the home crowd went into his fight with Kaiko Brito as the favourite, he had a clear plan, but he just didn’t get any chances.

Brito had already scored two knockdowns in the first round, he added two more in the second round, one in the third round and that’s when referee Jan Vobornik stopped the fight. On the one hand, Kozma is to be admired for what he endured, but the threat to his health is being addressed.

What does Ivan Buchinger have to say?

The match was seen live by the legendary Ivan Buchinger, who spoke to Kaocko.cz about the match. “I hate to say this because the referee Honza Voborník is a good friend of mine, but I think he made a huge mistake to let it go this far. To be honest, if I were in that fight, I would have thrown in the towel. Either I would have done it or my team would have done it,” he says.

The former two-time Octagon champion recalled that he had a similar fight himself in KSW, where he fought to the end, while not getting nearly the KO punches that Kozma did.

Buchinger even admitted that he was “quite worried” about Kozma’s health. He said the fight should have been stopped in the second round, where several knockout punches were landed in a row.

“David always managed to get up, but you could see he was completely out of it. In my opinion there were several moments where it could and should have been stopped. Again, me standing in that cage, the towel flew five times into the ring. And that’s something I can stand,” Buki said.
