The first Oktagon tournament in Germany went well, the highlight of the night was then Ivan Buchinger’s fight with Losen Keita for the lightweight title.
The bout didn’t get underway until after midnight, causing the crowd to thin out slightly. But those who left the arena may have regretted it. Keita put on a great performance and stopped Buchinger by KO in the first round.
The Slovakian will have to wait for his 40th win in professional MMA. He notched his first loss in the Octagon and only his eighth in MMA. What was his message to his fans?
“There’s always one to lose and this time it was me. My opponent was very well prepared for me and knew my weakness, which is the first round. Except for one loss, which was on points, I always lost in the first round and on KO. It’s just the way it is, there are some things you can’t change, even if you really want to.
Thank you all for cheering me on and sending so many messages. You give me strength, but unfortunately it’s not always what we imagine,” he wrote on his Instagram.
“I am sad not only about the loss, but especially about you who write your wisdom under my statuses. Everyone has a chance to experience what we fighters go through, what strength we put into every single preparation.
The daily two-phase workouts, losing 10 to 15 pounds, not to mention what it’s like to fight past midnight, to be 100 percent body and soul when others are already asleep. For you, a fighter is only a fighter until he wins.
As soon as he makes a mistake, you’re blaming him. But you have a chance to try it too. Join our ranks, take up the sport, walk the path we’ve walked and show you’re better! Just because I lost now doesn’t mean I’m done. I’m moving on and I’ll come back stronger for the next game. Congratulations to my opponent,” he added.
But he still holds the featherweight belt, which Keita would like to take from him again. So it’s a question of whether he’ll agree to a rematch in that weight class, or whether the Octagon will give Buchinger a more viable opponent.
