Bah injured and will miss the Champions League double of his life
Alexander Bah was injured in the 23rd minute. Mateus Uribe was late in the duel and finished off the Danish international uncomfortably. Bah twisted his knee and damaged ligaments, which ended the match for him.
When Vladimír Coufal missed the Europa League quarter-final against Slavia due to injury, he talked about ruining his lifelong dream. Alexander Bah, who will miss the Champions League quarter-finals, probably has the same thoughts now.
Alexander Bah picked up his injury in the 23rd minute. Mateus Uribe was late in the fray and finished off the Danish international awkwardly. Bah twisted his knee and damaged ligaments, which ended the match for him.
Benfica were already in the lead at that point, as in the tenth minute a centre from Baha was sent into the crossbar by Goncalo Ramos before the ball was unluckily knocked into his own net by goalkeeper Diogo Costa. After Gilberto came on for the ex-Slav player, the home side’s play collapsed.
Before half-time, Uribe managed to equalise and was thus at another important moment after a foul on Baha. And after the change of sides, the visitors turned the tide. In the 54th minute, Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi scored.
For Benfica, the loss is no problem. They are seven points clear of Porto at the top of the table with seven rounds to go. It only needs to win five rounds before the end of the league season.
A much bigger loss is the absence of Baha, who will miss two to four weeks. Thus, he will most likely miss not even one Champions League quarter-final. The first game is this Tuesday, the rematch next Wednesday.
Bah has developed into a stable member of the starting lineup since his summer transfer from Slavia.
Although he was second choice at the beginning, he is now indispensable thanks to one shot and eight assists. But he will miss the games of the season.
