Jonas Magard was supposed to defend his Octagon title at the end of the year in a sold out O2 arena, but unfortunately it won’t happen. Filip Macek already has a new opponent and the Danish champion had to undergo surgery.
The cursed O2 arena? Unfortunately, there’s no denying it. We missed the main event between Patrik Kinclo and Karlos Vemola completely. So the rematch between Jonas Magarde and Filip Mack was supposed to be the draw.
But a few days before the tournament, some unpleasant news came. The Danish champion was injured and will not be in the match. However, Macek can look forward to another quality opponent, who has four fights in the UFC under his belt.
But now back to Magard. He broke his cheekbone when he took a knee to the face during a sparring session. “It didn’t put me down, I still felt fine. Except for the hole in my face where my cheekbone was. Coach made me go to the hospital to get checked,” he expressed on Instagram.
“At the hospital they did a CT scan of my face and couldn’t believe what they saw. I broke my cheekbone in three different places and had to have surgery. Despite all that, I still wanted to fight,” said the Danish Shark.
Magard revealed, among other things, that he asked the doctors if he could have the surgery after the fight. But the answer was clear, the surgery had to be as soon as possible and that’s what happened.
Now the Dane has had it and can concentrate fully on his recovery. He won’t be in the cage for a while. He apologizes to the fans in disappointment. He said he was in the best shape of his life.
It’s possible that Magard could lose his title soon. Macek and Lopez will be competing for the interim championship belt for now, but the winner could certainly go for the regular title in the first half of the year.
