Twente player has to go to jail for driving without a licence! The club immediately terminated his contract

The former Dutch international and current FC Twente player has a problem. Joshua Brenet was sentenced to a month in prison after driving twice without a licence. The club has already terminated his contract.

Thirty-year-old Joshua Brenet has had a successful career. He has played for PSV, Hoffenheim, Vitesse and Twente, where he played his last game on 17 March. But he won’t be adding any more.

In fact, the experienced defender, who has worn the Netherlands national team jersey in the past, is heading to jail for a month. He was sentenced to that on Tuesday after repeatedly driving without a licence.

The incident occurred during checks on January 10 and then again on January 23. Meanwhile, he has not had a driving licence since December 10, 2020, when he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

At that time, he was fined €450 and was due to attend a course, which he failed to attend. For that reason, his driving licence was invalid.

Brenet did not attend the hearing in person but was represented by his lawyer. The public prosecutor recommended 60 hours of community service and a week in prison, but in the end the sentence was higher.

“He knew he couldn’t drive. If he decides to do so, he must face the penalty. It’s like getting a red card, but you keep playing football. That’s the way it looks to me, ” the police judge said of the suspended sentence.

Brenet will therefore head to jail for a month and then have to look for a new job. The club has decided to terminate his contract. “FC Twente and the player’s agents are negotiating the termination of his contract. Brenet will no longer play for Twente,” the club announced.
