Colorado confirmed their growing form and beat Vancouver on home ice. The NHL leader lost its third game in a row. Nathan MacKinnon extended his home point streak, but the hero of the game was forward Ryan Johansen, who contributed two goals to the 3-1 victory.
The home team was supported by star Nikola Jokic in the stands
Star basketball player of the Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic came to support the home team in the Ball Arena. The two-time NBA MVP sat among the crowd with his daughter Ognjen on his lap. Of course, his presence was not lost on the crowd and Jokic received a standing ovation.
He is, by the way, one of the main candidates for the NBA MVP award this season. Specifically averaging 26.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Like Nathan MacKinnon, he is one of the hot candidates to win the Hart Trophy.
In the end, Jokic brought luck to the Denver team, although the first period belonged to Vancouver. The goaltending on both sides was solid this season. On the Avalanche side, Alexandar Georgiev played the game and Thatcher Demko in goal for Vancouver.
In the 1st period, which was evenly matched in terms of shots, Georgiev was the first to capitulate. In the 11th minute, J.T. Miller, who scored his 28th goal of the season. Forward Brock Boeser got the point for his assist. He scored his 57th point in his 58th game of the season, surpassing his NHL single-season point total. And he still has a lot of games left to play.
Quinn Hughes also assisted on Miller’s goal. It was the 69th point of the season for the hot candidate for the Norris Trophy, which is awarded to the best defenseman of the season, and increased his lead over second-place Cale Makar in quarterback scoring to 10 points. Demko also capitulated for the first time in the game at the start of the second period after being outmuscled by Ryan Johansen in the 3rd minute to tie the game.
Colorado decided the game in the 3rd period
Johansen scored his second goal of the game again early in the period. In addition, seasoned veteran Zach Parise also had an assist, his 3rd point in 8 games for Colorado this season. After Demko was recalled from the Vancouver cage, he capitulated into an empty cage with 28 seconds left off the stick of Artturi Lehkonen.
Mikko Rantatnen also scored an assist and most importantly, Canadian MacKinnon extended his home point streak to 27 games in a row.
He reduced the point deficit to the productivity leader Kucherov to two points. The Canadian has come up empty in just 10 of 57 games this season.
Home goalie Georgiev picked up his 30th win this season, tying Demko for the lead in that statistic. It was the third consecutive defeat for the Vancouver Canucks.
