Oktagon 51 is over and besides interesting fights we could see some emotional moments. One of them was provided by German veteran Martin Zawada, who decided to end his active career after his defeat to Daniel Skvor.
After his end in KSW, veteran Martin Zawada came to the Oktagon. In this, his goal was to build a brand in Germany as well, which the organization succeeded in doing to perfection. The experienced German first succumbed to Stephan Pütz, then to Alexander Poppeck.
His next fight was in Prague’s O2 Arena, where his opponent was Daniel Škvor. Zawada was an outsider, yet many believed that he would taste the taste of victory again after a long time. But it didn’t happen and the German scored his third defeat in the organization.
Still, he left the cage to much applause. The reason? He has decided to end his storied career, knowing full well that he can no longer match the current elite.
Thus, Zawada finishes with a 29:18 record, having managed to win only one of his last six games. His ending was a blessing, even at the press conference you could see what this means for him.
Zawada after the end of his career
“Thank you for two years in the Oktagon, I made my decision before the fight, it was very emotional. I’ve been doing MMA for 23 years, I’ve been fighting for 20 years, it was a great fight, I respect Skvor, we respect each other. I would like to thank the Czech crowd, the atmosphere was great, it’s time for a new generation.
In Germany I could maybe cooperate on some projects with Oktagon, I have good relations with German fighters. I’m old now, I’m 40 years old, I did my best work. With Skvor it was a battle, I wanted to win, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.
I never refused a challenge and never gave up, I can look at myself in the mirror and be proud of myself and what I did for German MMA,” he said at the press conference.
