The Liverpool legend took a dig at a rival: No doubt Aston Villa have a better coach
He has long been one of the most underrated coaches, and not for nothing is he considered a Europa League champion. Currently, Unai Emery is the main architect of Aston Villa’s rise, according to Sky Sports expert he is already the third best coach in the Premier League.
He has long been one of the most underrated coaches, and not for nothing is he considered a Europa League champion. Currently, Unai Emery is the main architect of Aston Villa’s rise, according to Sky Sports expert he is already the third best coach in the Premier League.
It didn’t look like it for long last year, but Aston Villa eventually kicked off the Top 7 and the Conference Europa League. It was a surprise, but only considering the situation in which Unai Emery took over the team.
The Villans were in fact just above the relegation zone, although the expectation by the squad was that they could really aim for at least the Top 10. But Steven Gerrard left in time, Emery adapted quickly and things went up quickly.
“We can argue that Emery is the third best coach in the Premier League. If we go back 12 months when he took over Aston Villa, they are a much better run team than Manchester United. There is no doubt about that,” Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports.
Even Manchester United have picked up in the 2023 calendar year. It met its primary goal of a top four finish and the Champions League, but in terms of performance it was miserable at times. The Villans, on the other hand, certainly deserved seventh place.
And that was mainly down to domestic form. It started with a triumph over Tottenham, Arsenal turned it around at Villa Park only in stoppage time, unwittingly starting an incredible season. No one has scored at this stadium in the league since.
Overall, the winning streak has now lasted 13 games, which is of course a joint record. This season, a fantastic home record has pulled Emery’s charges up to fifth place, just three points behind first-placed Manchester City.
“If anyone is better, it’s Jurgen Klopp with Pep Guardiola. They are Champions League winners,” Carragher continued.
Bottom line, Carragher ranked Ange Postecoglou and Mikel Arteta alongside Erik ten Hag for Emery. It was Emery, meanwhile, who failed to succeed his Spanish colleague on the Gunners bench after taking over the scepter from Arsene Wenger.
