Super Cup in Warsaw! Besides the return of the Russian teams, UEFA also decided on other topics

Regarding Tuesday’s meeting of football’s governing body in Limassol, the most talked-about issue is the decision on the return of Russian teams to UEFA competitions, albeit in this case “only” youth competitions. However, the organisation has also decided on other novelties, one of them being the Super Cup in Warsaw.

Tuesday’s meeting of football’s governing body in Limassol stirred emotions of unprecedented proportions, not only among fans, of course, but also within the associations themselves.

We have covered the whole issue in detail in our previous articles, but the situation and the decision itself on the return of Russian teams, even if only youth teams, to UEFA competitions could still theoretically change.

The English Football Association disagrees with this decision, and the Ukrainian Football Association in particular has strongly expressed its opinion on the whole issue. Thus, we can expect another continuation of the recently started big topic.

Super Cup in Warsaw

In any case, the UEFA Executive Committee decided on other matters besides this. One of them is the fact that the National Stadium in Warsaw will host the UEFA Super Cup in 2024, which will be played on 14 August.

Poland will therefore enjoy a duel between the winner of the Champions League and the Europa League. It should be noted that the National Stadium in Warsaw has a capacity of 58,580 seats and is understandably the largest in the country.

It was in this stadium, for example, that the 2015 Europa League final between Sevilla and Ukraine’s Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk took place. At that time, 45,000 people saw the Spanish team win.

Rubiales replaced

At a recent meeting in Limassol, UEFA’s management also confirmed that Spaniard Luis Rubiales will be replaced as one of the vice-presidents by the Albanian federation’s chief Armand Duka.

This comes in the wake of a scandal that has rocked Spanish football. Rubiales resigned as head of the Spanish federation and from the UEFA Executive Committee after the Jenni Hermosa kiss-on-the-mouth affair following the Women’s World Cup final.
