The Moisés Caicedo transfer saga is finally over. The twenty-one-year-old midfielder officially transferred to Chelsea in London a few dozen hours ago, who will send a huge sum of money to Brighton for him.
It already looked like the twenty-one year old talented Ecuadorian midfielder would move to Liverpool. But in the end, it all came crashing down in the final stages of this potential transfer when Caicedo declared that the only club he wanted to move to was Chelsea.
And so, in the end, that’s what happened. Caicedo was announced a few dozen hours ago as the new addition to the London club’s back line.
According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will send £115 million to Brighton for him.
This amount should be a new transfer record as the Stamford Bridge outfit recorded their most expensive transfer in January this year. It was Chelsea who brought Enzo Fernandez from Benfica Lisbon, for whom they spent £106.8 million.
Chelsea thus increased Liverpool’s offer even more. The Reds offered the Seagulls £111 million, whereupon Brighton immediately knocked off the transfer, all that was left was to fine-tune the personal details. And it was on those that Caicedo’s transfer to Liverpool failed.
Caicedo moved to Brighton in 2021 from Ecuador’s Independiente. But he was then loaned out to Belgian side Beerschot, from where he returned in January 2022.
It’s amazing, I’ve always been a Chelsea fan!
He has since settled permanently in Brighton’s A-team. In total, he has played 53 competitive games there, scoring two goals and assisting three more from his position as a defensive midfielder. He signed an eight-year contract at Chelsea.
“Makélélé and Kanté were an inspiration for me. I think I can say we have similar qualities, but they were better. When I was a kid, I always supported Chelsea and watched their games. It’s amazing to be here, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Caicedo said in an interview with the club’s website.
