Disgusting! Everton star burned chances and the Toffees lost, the player received disgusting insults on social media, the club promptly responds
Everton have had a difficult season, during which they have had their work cut out to maintain their first league affiliation. The new Premier League season is not expected to be any different. That’s partly why fans were hoping the Toffees could handle Fulham at home to open the season. It didn’t happen, and one of the team’s stars took to social media.
The Toffees are one of the most traditional teams in English football, they have been playing England’s top competition since 1954, but things have not been looking good for them in recent seasons. Although a new modern stadium is being built, the results are not great.
Last season Everton escaped relegation by just two points. Some massive summer strengthening has not taken place and so the club is not expected to suddenly play at least a quiet mid-table game. However, the first game of the new Premier League season didn’t look bad.
The Liverpool side took on Fulham at home and had several chances. Most of them were finished by Neal Maupay, but he burned them all. The Cottagers then took one of their two shots on target to win 1: 0.
If the expected goals stats were reality, Everton would have won, but alas. And Maupay, who failed to score on several big chances, earned himself some disgusting criticism on social media for his failure.
One comment that understandably offended the Toffees star was about a fan hoping the player’s mother was in her grave.
Everton understandably stood up for the footballer and strongly condemned such behaviour on social media. Outside of that, the Toffees are reporting that the accounts that triggered the wave of abuse against Maupay are under investigation.
“We encourage anyone who uses social media to report, condemn and highlight any similar attacks. Discrimination and hatred have no place in our game,” the club statement said.
