Ten Hag wanted Mount back at Ajax. Chelsea preferred to send him to Derby County then
Sometimes some coaches don’t get the player they want because he is too good for their club. That’s what happened to Eric ten Hague in the past when he wanted a young Mason Mount. Now he’s finally got him.
Sometimes some coaches don’t get the player they want because he is too good for their club. That’s what happened to Eric ten Hague in the past when he wanted a young Mason Mount. Now he’s finally got him.
Erik ten Hag wanted Mason Mount very badly during his time with Vitesse in the Netherlands. At the start of the 2017/18 season he was 18 years old and he made his first breakthrough in top flight football. In 40 games he netted 14 goals and assisted ten times.
He also gained experience in the Europa League, but he won over coach ten Haga the most in a mutual match. The bald coach was then leading Ajax, and Mount scored from a direct kick in their confrontation, contributing to a 3-2 win.
But Chelsea needed to prepare their talent for the Premier League. Instead of Ajax, it found him a job in the tough Championship, specifically at Derby County. With 11 goals and six assists, he was definitely promoted to the Blues’ A-team.
Mount quickly took a liking to the Premier League. Leaving aside his last failed season, he contributed 44 goals in his first three seasons among England’s elite. Of the midfielders, only Kevin de Bruyne and Bruno Fernandes were better.
During his time in the Premier League, Mount has shown himself to be a fluent, hard-working midfielder who doesn’t like to lose. Exactly the type of player the Hag likes to use. He downright doesn’t like lazy players, which is one of the reasons he brought in the hard-working Casemiro last year.
The question is where he fits in the Mount lineup. Either way, he will be useful because, for example, the aging Christian Eriksen can’t finish games at his age. Since Christmas, he has only finished one of the 15 games he started.
Theoretically, he can also start on the wing, where the Red Devils are probably pushing the boot the hardest. Anthony hasn’t shined much yet, Jadon Sancho is often injured, Facundo Pellistri and Alejandro Garancho are too young.
