The best goalie of the moment? Fans marvel at David Raya’s incredible two-goal haul
Atalanta’s match with Arsenal didn’t offer much footballing beauty. Except for a fantastic double strike by David Raya, who after catching a penalty managed to save Retegui’s subsequent shot. The Spanish goalkeeper’s feat will be hard to top.

- Atalanta’s match with Arsenal did not produce a goal
- David Raya had a fantastic double strike
- Is the Spaniard the best goalkeeper at the moment?
The only goalless game on Thursday’s Champions League schedule was Atalanta’s clash with Arsenal. The second team of the last Premier League season only made a significant threat in the thirteenth minute.
Bukayo Saka took a direct kick from an interesting position, but his shot to the back post was saved by goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. The latter also cleared Thomas Partey’s shot, but he was most likely offside.
But the most interesting moment of the match came after the change of sides. In the 51st minute, Mateo Retegui, the top scorer in the Italian Serie A with four goals, took the penalty kick.
The best goalkeeper of the moment?
But David Raya read his intention perfectly and made a fantastic save. The 25-year-old striker had one more opportunity to score, but his header was not successful either. The Barcelona native was again up against it. Take a look for yourself.
“He could have saved the Titanic,” commented one fan. “I’ve never been a fan of his, but his performances are phenomenal. I take back everything bad I said about him,” adds another.
Raya did something similar in the second round of the Premier League at Aston Villa. That time Ollie Watkins broke his teeth on the Spanish goalkeeper. Thanks to that, the current Arsenal number one subsequently won the award for the best intervention of the month.
The Gunners can rely on a defensive performance even in this difficult period. They have only conceded once in their opening four league games, and that was shorthanded against Brighton.
Twenty-nine-year-old Raya is undisputedly one of the best goalkeepers of our time. Mikel Arteta’s team will continue to rely on his skills as they face Manchester City on Sunday and PSG at Emirates Stadium in the second round of the Champions League.
