UEFA has punished Fiorentina and West Ham, the finalists of the last edition of the Conference Europa League, for the behaviour of their fans. However, the English team will receive a harsher punishment for their supporters.
Fiorentina and West Ham did not escape punishment for the behaviour of their fans before and during last season’s Conference Europa League final.
In fact, UEFA punished both clubs with a ban on fans and a financial penalty for issues related to the final match, which took place on 7 June in Eden.
There had already been several clashes between the two camps before the match, with police arresting sixteen fans during that time.
As a result, Fiorentina were fined €30,000 by UEFA and banned from one away game for the trouble caused before kick-off. However, West Ham received a harsher punishment.
UEFA also punished the London club for the same thing. However, a stricter standard has already been met in the eyes of the football organisation by an incident in the first half of the final match, when a Hammers supporter threw an object onto the pitch which injured Fiorentina captain Cristian Biraghi.
He subsequently started bleeding from his head and had to play the rest of the game with a bandage wrapped around his head.
Financial penalty, two-year ban
Biraghi was obviously disturbed by the act and in a post-match interview afterwards expressed his wish that someone would deal with the West Ham supporters.
And it’s safe to say his wish was granted. UEFA fined the club €58,000 and banned the fans from travelling for the next two European Cup matches. One of them will then not see the stadium for two years.
