Will Soucek keep his position? A young Englishman is pushing for his place, fans call for change
Tomáš Souček is not having an ideal season. Since his arrival at West Ham, he has been a driving force, a key player and a figure without whom coach David Moyes could not imagine a line-up. Currently, however, his own fans, who have been praising him to the skies, are calling for him to be moved on.

Football is a fickle sport. One minute the fans love you, the next they’re throwing you out of the club. Tomas Soucek came to West Ham in 2020 and, without exaggeration, he was the main reason the Hammers saved themselves in the spring, despite being in a very difficult position.
Moreover, he was one of the main reasons for West Ham’s rise the following season. He scored 10 goals and took the Hammers to the Europa League. He didn’t have a bad season last season either, scoring five times, including once in the Europa League.
But since the new season, his performances have been less than stellar. You can see a bit of fatigue on him, he doesn’t fit well with Declan Rice, who has Soucek’s favourite role in the centre of midfield.
However, coach David Moyes continues to trust him. But another midfielder, Flynn Downes, is already pushing for his place. The 23-year-old midfielder came to West Ham in the summer from Swansea, who are getting a chance in the Conference League and have played the last three games in full, with two minutes in the Premier League so far.
However, his performances in cup duels have earned him the favour of the fans who would love to see him in Soucek’s position.
“Flynn Downes is the future captain of West Ham. Great performance tonight, he’s the second Declan Rice,” wrote a West Ham fan on Twitter.
“Did you see the difference in ball control between Downes and Soucek? Like night and day,” read one status. “Leaving him on the bench in the league and playing Soucek makes no sense,” another Hammer believes.
“It’s only a matter of time before Downes gets a chance in the Premier League from the start instead of Soucek,” wrote a well-known West Ham Central account.
“Tomas Soucek must be incredibly concerned about his teammate’s great form. It seems that aerial ability and stamina are the only things keeping him in Moyes’ starting eleven at the moment,” wrote Antony Martin on the Hammers News fansite.
