Who is Ellen White?
Women’s football is growing in popularity, but the names of many players are unheard of by football fans. It seems to be the same with Ellen White, who is mainly known to the English. After all, she is an English footballer who has had a great career.
She is now 33 years old and is the all-time top scorer for the women’s national team. She has scored 52 goals in 113 games. Only Wayne Rooney (54 goals) has scored more goals for the English national team (male or female).
Now she was one of the driving forces behind the England women’s team that won the Women’s European Championship on home soil. During her career, she has switched teams with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, where she is now.
What makes her story specific?
White has had an outstanding career. However, behind it all was a huge effort and the fact that she never gave up. And that she had the reason and the opportunity to do so.
She started in football with the Aylesbury Town boys’ junior team. She scored over 100 goals in eight years in the local league. But at nine, she was banned from playing in the regional league. The Bucks Herald even ran a front-page article on 23 September 1998.
It was the front page that took social media by storm after the European Championships. “Ellen is only nine years old and doesn’t understand why she can’t play football,” it read. Twenty-four years later, she is rejoicing with a major trophy.
