President Ronaldo Nazário has got Real Valladolid back into La Liga. Here’s how he celebrated with the players on the pitch
It was not only Real Madrid or the Czech and Finnish national hockey teams that celebrated this weekend. Real Valladolid, owned by Brazilian football icon Ronaldo Nazário, celebrated their promotion back to the Spanish top flight. And he was logically very happy to be promoted to La Liga.
Last year, Real Valladolid fought to stay in La Liga until the last round, but a cruel defeat to champions Atlético Madrid sent them down a level.
But the team from the province of Castilla & León didn’t do too well there and won their ticket back to La Liga in the first year. The situation was a messy one. The first two teams go straight through, the other four go to the barrage. But three teams, Almería, Eibar and Real Valladolid, were fighting for the top two places.
Púcela were the worst off before the last round, two points behind second-placed Eibar and first-placed Almería. But the final round was quite tricky, with Almería only drawing and Eibar even losing. Real Valladolid won 3:0, leapfrogging Eibar and in a huge euphoria from second place to the top Spanish competition.
Since Valladolid needed the loss of Eibar, who played the last Alcorcón, nobody counted much on direct promotion and the players were rather preparing for the barrage. However, Eibar blew up on the ground of the worst team in La Liga2 and thus have to enter the unfathomable barrage.
When the referees called an end to both matches, a purple frenzy erupted at Estadio José Zorilla. So much so, in fact, that club president and legendary Brazilian footballer Ronaldo Nazário donned his jersey and celebrated with the players on the pitch.
He later came to congratulate the players in the locker room, where his charges immediately jumped on him with joy.
In a huge display of emotion, Ronaldo then hugged coach Pacheta as well. Both of them wanted very much to get Real Valladolid back to La Liga immediately and when they did, both of them were filled with incredible joy.
