The new season of the Nations League is about to start, with national teams competing. The Nations League is divided into three leagues (A, B, C). This time the Czech national team is in Group A and will face Switzerland, Spain and Portugal. The latter two countries will now face each other.
Spain finished second in this competition last year, while their current opponents, Portugal, beat them in the final to become the first winners of this UEFA competition.
This year, the Spaniards are big favourites to win the overall title at the World Cup, which will be held in Qatar. They will also enter their first Nations League match as favourites.
Spain holds a streak of four wins in a row on the international stage. They have beaten Greece, Sweden, Albania and Iceland in succession with a score of 9:1. The first two matches were played as part of the World Cup qualification, the other two were only friendlies.
Portugal dominated the entire Nations League and had a great record. Of the twelve matches played, they won eight, drew three times and lost only once.
The last matches between the two teams always ended in a draw. The most frequent draw was a 0:0 result, which certainly didn’t please many fans. However, the last mutual match ended in a 3: 3 result, with Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a hat-trick.
Spain is in better form. Even mutual matches may say more for the Spaniards, as they last lost to Portugal in 2004. We can expect another loss now. Portugal might want to defend their title, but Spain have a much better team and will be more determined to win.
