The Champions League quarter-finals brought together Spain’s Villarreal, who are enjoying a successful season under coach Unaeus Emery, and Bavarian giant Munich, who are one of the favourites to win the competition overall.
Unai Emery managed to knock out Italy’s Juventus in the eighth round with Villarreal. They drew 1-1 at home and won 3-0 in Italy, so there could be no doubt about their progression. They would certainly like to repeat the same against Bayern Munich.
However, with the form of the Spanish side going into the Champions League quarter-finals, they cannot have high hopes. In the last two games, they have lost against teams from the bottom of the table. Worse still, it has failed to score a single goal in those matches.
Bayern Munich made it to the quarter-finals against Salzburg, who they drew 1-1, but in the second leg they were crushed 7-1. In the last five matches Bayern have won three times and drawn twice, with a record of 17:4.
Villarreal have a very difficult match ahead of them. Bayern Munich are playing fantastically in the Champions League as far as the knockout stages are concerned. In the 2019/2020 season, they won this competition. Out of the last 29 matches in the Champions League, they have only lost once, drawn twice and won in 26 appearances.
To this fantastic streak, we can add the fact that Bayern Munich have not known defeat on an away pitch in the Champions League since September 2017. However, Villarreal will try to thwart this statistic, appearing in the quarter-finals of the LM for the first time since 2009.
It will be a special match for coach Unaie Emery. It will be his 50th appearance in the Champions League. Moreover, he has good statistics against German teams, winning eight times, drawing three times and losing five times.
Villarreal can surprise, and they did so clearly against Juventus. However, Bayern Munich is a very experienced team and they certainly have not set themselves the goal of only reaching the quarter-finals in this competition. In fact, this giant is aiming for the top spot.
Bayern will certainly not want to falter in the first leg like they did in the eighth-final. However, the hosts are not going to lose for free, so we expect them to assert themselves against the Germans.
