German coach Jürgen Klopp has reiterated and confirmed his intention to leave Liverpool at the end of his contract. He did so while speaking to reporters at a press conference ahead of the league duel with West Ham.
The fifty-four-year-old coach has two more years left on his contract at Liverpool, expiring in 2024, but the news has sparked a lot of interest among fans and media alike.
The German coach is in his seventh year in charge of Liverpool. In October 2015, he came from a very successful engagement with Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles with the team and reached the Champions League final in the 2012/13 season, in which they lost to Bayern Munich.
He continues his successful coaching career at Liverpool. With the Reds, he won the prestigious Champions League in the 2018/19 season and the Premier League title the following year. Last week, he won his last trophy so far in the Carabao Cup. He is second in the Premier League so far this season behind Manchester City.
What did Jürgen Klopp say when talking to reporters at the press conference? “The plan is still the same, actually nothing has changed. If I decide to leave in 2024, it has nothing to do with the quality of the team.”
“Everything we do is long-term. This club has to be even better, especially when I’m no longer here and that’s the plan, that’s what we’re working on. It’s not so important how long I stay, it’s more important what we do until then.”
Asked which factors will determine his future progression, if not the quality of his Liverpool team, he replied: ” If I have the energy to do it. This is the important thing. I love what I do, but I have said a couple of times that there must be something else in the world than always thinking about very skilful, good-looking and fantastically nice footballers.”
Klopp also plans to take a year off from coaching after his engagement. That’s even if other interesting offers come his way, including taking over the German national team.
Incidentally, an offer to lead the German national team was also on the table last year after the Euros. But Klopp turned it down, saying that he still has a 3 year contract at Liverpool and intends to keep it.
