Atletico Madrid is not having the best season this year. They are in fourth place in the league and are an abysmal 16 points behind first-placed Real. They have a game in hand, but the gap is too big.
The league has not been going well lately. It has won only once in its last five games, drawn once and lost three times, and the 6:8 scoreline is not flattering either.
Compared to Bilbao, Atletico are not that bad. Bilbao is in ninth place in the Spanish La Liga. They are five points behind Atletico Madrid.
Athletic have won twice, drawn once and lost twice in their last five games. The score is a bit more positive, scoring 7 goals and conceding 6.
Atletico Madrid qualified for the semi-finals of the Super Cup by winning La Liga. Bilbao will play in the semi-finals thanks to their second place in the Spanish Cup. However, the loser of the Cup defends its Super Cup title after beating Real Madrid 2-1 in the final last year.
However, Atletico would have liked this defence not to happen. They enter the game as slight favourites. Coach Diego Simeone has great statistics against Bilbao. He hasn’t lost 87% of his games against this team, managing to win 16 times and draw 4 times out of 23 matches. Thus, he came out as the loser only three times.
It will certainly be interesting to watch Madrid’s striker Correa, who has done well against Bilbao. In the last 12 games against them he has scored twice and assisted three times. He has also added four yellow cards to these statistics.
Neither Madrid nor Bilbao are having a good season, but Simeone’s charges are having a better season and will lead them to the final.
