West Ham closed out 2021 with a 4-1 win. Tomas Soucek and Said Benrahma responded to Emmanuel Dennis’ goal in the fourth minute, while Mark Noble and Nikola Vlasic scored after the change of sides.
The Hammers have had a very successful calendar year in 2021. First, the second half of the 2020/21 season, when they finished sixth and the Europa League group thanks to Jesse Lingard, was a great success and they continued their good performance in the autumn.
“We had a great year. Everything started to fall into place in January. There were already signs in the first half of last season, but it wasn’t until the second half that we were picking up wins and attacking the ranks that mean participation in the European Cups. We asked ourselves if we could do it,” Moyes told the club’s website.
If it wasn’t for occasional lapses, Soucek and co. could have done even better. Last year, it looked for a long time like the Champions League, but West Ham ran out of steam late in the season and were happy with sixth place. The Londoners also had a weaker season in December, when they dropped out of the Premier League’s Top 4.
The dips in form are understandable given West Ham’s squad. The Hammers do not have a very wide roster, currently three injured defenders from the starting line-up are known, Craig Dawson, for example, is not doing well at all.
“The boys have shown a lot of good things in preparation for this season and they have carried that over into the league. We can’t avoid fluctuations. We’re in the middle of one right now. We are trying to get as many points as possible, even if we are not playing very well,” continued the West Ham coach.
Moyes’ charges ended a five-match winless streak on Tuesday, having won only twice since November 25, against Chelsea and just on Tuesday against Watford. They jumped to sixth in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
West Ham handled the match unexpectedly well, given the injured mainstays and the absence of the gutted Declan Rice, a three-goal win was not expected. In addition, Alex King enjoyed his first minutes in the Premier League at the end.
“I was pleased with the way we bounced back from the defeat to Southampton. We deserved to win. We didn‘t play as well as we did the other times, but we got our confidence back,” Moyes concluded.
