Moyes doesn’t understand West Ham’s disallowed goal. What did Rice say about the future with Kretinsky?
West Ham failed to win their third Premier League game in a row on Wednesday, this time drawing 1-1 at home to Brighton. The match was significantly affected by the non-conceding of the goal that would have sealed the win for the Hammers. What did head coach David Moyes have to say about the situation at the press conference?
West Ham failed to win their third Premier League game in a row on Wednesday, this time drawing 1-1 at home to Brighton. The game was significantly affected by the non-conceding of the goal that would have sealed the win for the Hammers. What did head coach David Moyes have to say about the situation at the press conference?
West Ham led from the fifth minute, with a header from Czech international Tomas Soucek. Brighton then went on to conquer West Ham’s goal and managed to equalise in stoppage time thanks to Neal Maupay’s superb scissors to make it 1-1.
In the 49th minute it looked like the Hammers had secured the win with a second goal. After a corner kick, the ball mysteriously found its way into the net, the referee initially conceded the goal, but VAR subsequently overturned it.
“It was a fundamental VAR decision. You would probably expect me to disagree with it, but I have real reasons for it. It’s almost impossible to overturn the goal,” Moyes said.
The whole situation was very convoluted. First, Craig Dawson’s foul was examined, but it was not a clear foul, the West Ham defender was acting like any other player in a standard situation.
But then Mikhail Antonio’s offside was addressed. Here it was simple, if the tidy striker touched the ball, the goal was disallowed. After almost three minutes of communication with the assistants on the video, the head referee raised his hand to indicate that the goal was disallowed. Yet no footage showed Antonio touching the ball
“The referee on the pitch didn’t see it, only VAR could decide. Whoever it was, I hope they come and explain why. I think Shane Duffy’s foot touched the ball last,” Moyes added.
West Ham haven’t won in the league since Daniel Kretinsky’s massive investment, hence the speculation about the reinforcements Moyes could bring in during the winter transfer window.
Team captain Declan Rice also briefly commented on the new minority owner at the press conference. He is tempted by English big clubs every transfer window, yet remains loyal to the red and blue of the jersey.
“I hope we can get into the Champions League, my ambition of course is to play in the Champions League. I believe the club will keep going,” Rice said.
