Tottenham fans must be shivering with terror. Certainly no one should begrudge them their Friday attendance at work. Antonio Conte’s charges have been a real embarrassment.

In the fifth match of the group stage of the Conference Europa League, they travelled to Slovenia to take on the fifth-placed team in the local top flight, NŠ Mura.

The odds for the Slovenian team to win were listed at some bookmakers as high as 22,00. Spurs were expected to win in a landslide. But it didn’t happen.

In the 11th minute, midfielder Tomi Horvath sent the home team into the lead. Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in the 32nd minute.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Tottenham managed to draw level in the 72nd minute at 1-1, but Mura scored the winning goal in stoppage time. In the 94th minute, striker Amadej Maresa scored.

The Slovenians will undoubtedly remember this win for decades to come, and they may well remember it a hundred years from now. But in London, they will want to forget this debacle as soon as possible.

The situation is all the worse because Tottenham still have no certainty going into the spring phase of Europe’s third cup competition. It has seven points, the same as second-placed Vitesse. The first Rennes has 11 points.

In the next match Spurs will face the French side, while Vitesse will host Mura. If Tottenham fail to win and the team from Arnhem gets at least a point against the Slovenians, the spectacular embarrassment will be complete.
