Europa League
Tomáš Souček and ex-Spartan Guélor Kanga together in sad statistics!
The European Thursday did not go as expected for the former rivals from Prague “S”. Tomáš Souček and Guélor Kanga scored own goals in their Europa League matches. West Ham lost two points (2::2) and Crvena Zvezda lost all three (0::1) due to an unfortunate own goal.
The Hammers don’t have to be so sorry about the loss to Genk in Belgium, because despite that they are already assured of qualification to the spring part of the Europa League. Soucek entered the match in the 58th minute and his unlucky moment came at the very end.
In the 87th minute, a centre from the right side flew into the West Ham penalty area and Soucek, in an acrobatic effort to clear the ball into the net, only slightly crossed it and caught out goalkeeper Areola.
Interestingly, Soucek scored in the Europa League for the first time since April 2019, but this time unfortunately into his own net.
The Gabonese midfielder, who met Soucek in the Prague derby, scored his own goal with his head! Guélor Kanga and his Crvena Zvezda played against Danish Midtjylland.
In the 56th minute, the skilful offensive all-rounder Evander played in a direct kick from relatively close range. The former Spartan stood just short of the wall and the subsequent shot went exactly into his head space. Kanga didn’t flinch, but headed the ball just inside the opposite post of his own goalkeeper.
Crvena Zvezda remained in second place in the group, but it was the Danish side who reduced their points lead to just two points.
