Jakub Pešek scored his first goal against Wales in the World Cup qualification, helping to draw 2-2. However, a point is not enough for the Czech national team, which the author of the first Czech goal on Friday is aware of.

The match itself was entertaining, but mainly thanks to the performance of the visitors. Wales pressed well and had dangerous breakaway chances, while the Czech players were very inaccurate.

“Balanced, difficult, challenging. It’s a pity we didn’t manage to win the match in front of great fans. But we have to take the point, both teams had chances, maybe they had even better chances.”

The chances of finishing second in the group have thus dropped close to zero, mainly due to the fact that the return match plays in Wales’ favour. Jaroslav Šilhavy’s charges will probably go into the barrage as unseeded.

“We will see. There are still more matches to come, which we will want to manage. Anyway, it’s a pity.”

At least the Czech Republic was helped to a draw by a lucky own goal by the visiting goalkeeper. He cashed in similarly to Ondrej Kolar two months ago at Ferencváros.

“We pressed them well. We told ourselves that the whitewash was all sorts of things, we wanted to attack the goalkeeper. It was so comical, the goalkeeper still wanted to kick it away. It was a lucky goal, it could have kicked us, which unfortunately it didn’t.”

The national team’s play was marked by the absence of the outside backs. No matter how much Jan Bořil is criticized, his runs were lacking, Filip Novák did not replace him. The importance of Vladimir Coufal needs no elaboration.

“It’s hard to say, I guess. But the rest of us got a chance, we wanted to replace them. The fans were great. It’s a pity,” concluded Pesek.
