English second division club Derby County are not having a happy time. The club’s financial problems are so high that it has been officially in receivership since the end of last week. The club is threatened with liquidation, a large points deduction and relegation.
The Athletic website reported that a potential buyer who would like to buy the traditional club and save it would have to pay debts that are in the order of a billion and a half crowns.
With the insolvency administrators having entered the club, it is certain that Derby will be deducted 12 points from the competition lead. And more points will follow.
According to The Athletic, there is a 50 per cent chance that the club will face liquidation.
However, Wayne Rooney, Derby’s manager, wants to remain loyal despite the fact that the club is most likely facing relegation to League Three.
“I am committed to the club, the players and the management team. I will do everything I can to make sure we get through this with honour. We are in for a tough time,” Rooney said.
“The situation is that some people who are paying off loans and mortgages will lose their jobs here. I heard about the whole situation on TV, which is not ideal. I haven’t had any contact with Mel (Morris, the owner) for some time,” he added.
