Penalties in the European Cup? A real lottery for Czech and Czechoslovak teams! Slovácko ends its mission

Slovácko tipped the scales to the unfortunate side. Czech and Czechoslovak teams that have ever entered competitions organised under the auspices of UEFA now have a negative penalty record. What does this mean for the Czech coefficient and how does the football public react?

After a fabulous 2020/2021 season, Slovácko has peeked into the European Cup for the first time in its history.

After 0:1 and 1:0 results against Bulgarian Lokomotiv Plovdiv, regardless of the changes in UEFA rules, this was a match that would have gone to extra time in previous seasons. There was no goal and therefore the advancing team had to be decided by penalties.

Unfortunately, the nervousness meant that Slovácko’s first three goal scorers failed and it was hard to do anything about it. After the penalties, the Bulgarian team finally won the promotion.

Czech and Czechoslovakia’s record in cup penalties is currently 7-8 in our favour. With the new UEFA rules we will encounter penalties much more often, hopefully with a positive result next time.

The only thing that can warm our hearts is the fact that our rivals in the national coefficients were losing too!

The nations fighting for the crucial 15th place in the coefficient ranking, apart from Turkey, also lost one representative each, the Greeks even lost two teams!

The reaction of the football public

The fans from Uherské Hradiště obviously showed themselves in a good light. Unfortunately, Slovácko’s goal scorers did not, but that’s football. On the one hand it brings sensation and joy, on the other sadness and disappointment.

“Slovácko is unfortunately out of the game. Neither from the game nor from penalties, the first three attempts failed. So at least a crumb for the win in the coefficient, but… Not to find a mobile, capable striker for Kliment for the European Cup was simply fatal. Then you can play as you want,” commented Luděk Mádl on Twitter.
