The current champions of the European club scene from Stamford Bridge are the last team that is represented in all teams playing in the semi-finals of the European Championship. So which players are representing Chelsea and who is doing best?
Let’s start with Tuesday’s semi-finalists, Italy and Spain. For the Apennine Peninsula, Chelsea have Jorginho and Emerson, who have different roles in the team. While Jorginho has started every game in the starting lineup, forming the brains of the entire Italian midfield, Emerson has only started two of the five games.
the 27-year-old defender first played the full 90 minutes in the match against Wales and 12 minutes in the quarter-final against Belgium. Like his club teammate, he has neither a goal nor an assist to his name so far.
The 31-year-old defender did not play in the first two group games. However, when he came on against Slovakia, it was a win, just like in the eighth and quarter-finals. He even scored a goal against Croatia to make it 2-1 and his place in the starting line-up against Italy should be a given.
In Wednesday’s other semi-final, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell will line up for England. While Mount has only not played in the eight-final against Germany, Chilwell has only made the bench twice so far. So the 24-year-old defender’s role so far is only as a “bench warmer”, while Mount is a hot candidate for a starting line-up position against Denmark.
The 25-year-old defender has played in every game in the starting line-up so far and has played every minute since the preliminary matches until the 80th minute of the quarter-final against the Czech Republic. At the Euros, he scored one goal in the match against Russia, increasing the score to 3-1 and was one of the architects of the sensational progress.
We’ll find out in the next few days who will be the Blues’ final winner. Even so, the fans of the club led by Thomas Tuchel have reason to rejoice at the national team level.
