The Argentine spielmacher has been performing consistently well for the third year in the Canaries’ jersey. This season he has helped Norwich to promotion to the top flight of English football with fifteen goals and seventeen assists, and looks set to play his last game in the yellow and green jersey.

Buendía started his football career in the youth teams of Real Madrid, but failed to make more of a name for himself, so he switched clubs at the tender age of fifteen. He moved a few kilometres south to the industrial city of Getafe.

Here he passed through all the youth categories until he finally broke into the senior team. In the 15/16 season, he played seventeen league games and scored his first goal in adult football. This was followed by a loan spell in the second Spanish league with Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa.

He was able to draw attention to himself with his performances and so he moved to England in the summer of 2018. Norwich City did not hesitate to pay 1 500 000 euros for him. In his first season he scored 25 points (8+17) and celebrated promotion to the Premier League with the Canaries.

Unfortunately, the yellow and green team did not celebrate great success in the top English football competition and so they parted ways immediately after the promotion. Even so, Buendía managed to add one goal and eight assists to his tally, which was above average and unusual for a woeful Norwich team.

Even at the time, there was much speculation about Buendía’s departure. Arsenal were the biggest suitors, lacking a so-called number ten and lacking creativity in their play. The Gunners eventually couldn’t reach an agreement with Norwich, and so the young Argentine came into this season still wearing the yellow and green jersey.

However, it now looks like Buendía’s time at Norwich has come to an end. Arsenal have been waging a long-distance battle with Aston Villa, who were also interested in him. Even today, Norwich rejected Arsenal’s offer, which was reported to be £30m without bonuses, the Canaries wanted at least £40m.

And so Aston Villa smashed the piggy bank, putting £35 million on the table of which, with all the bonuses, will be £40 and Emiliano Buendía is likely to wear The Villans jersey next season. He should also become the club’s most expensive signing ever.
